Texas Trip Notes: Pow Wow in San Antonio

The Celebrations of Traditions Pow Wow, part of the 2017 Fiesta San Antonio events, was held in a community center a bus ride away from the city center.  I was interested to see how this pow wow differed from the ones I had attended in Seattle.  There was more representation from the southwestern tribes here.  It was a small venue, and the participants were generous in giving permissions for my photos.  I loved seeing their colorful and varied regalia. Pow wows always demonstrate, for me, the importance of passing along cultural traditions, and you can see that in the families here.

A circle of drummers took the center of the floor.  The beat was like a heartbeat permeating the gym.

I took most of these portraits before the official start of the pow wow when the participants were getting ready.  We stayed for a gourd dance and for the Grand Entry.
